Shoreland Still at The Heart of North East Steel

Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plant, Redcar
Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI), a Thai based steelmaking company, made the decision in 2012 to reopen the famous Redcar steel plant that had been mothballed in 2010 by previous occupants, TATA Steel.

When the plant closed it was a massive blow to a region that has become synonymous with heavy industry and in particular, steelmaking. However, Teesside was to find salvation from an unlikely source; Thailand.

The agreement SSI made with TATA Steel heralded a new beginning for the landmark site and created 1,000 new jobs in the process.

Shoreland Access has now been supporting SSI for all their NDT requirements since early 2013. It has been a partnership that has grown from strength to strength resulting in Shoreland having its own office on site.

Being a COMAH site, the rules and regulations surrounding maintenance and upkeep of the site are incredibly stringent; meaning Shoreland’s expertise and experience in supporting COMAH sites has proven to be invaluable to SSI.

Shoreland’s latest project with the steel giant is proving to be the most complex and significant to date. Shoreland NDT Technicians are inspecting four stoves and the blast furnace at the site to ensure their integrity remains intact. Where stress corrosion cracks are found, Shoreland’s Welders, use Arc-Air to cut out plates and replace them.

It is a project that is scheduled to last two months. The logistics of such a project can prove challenging as the site still needs to fulfil its commitments of steel production whilst the works are on-going.
Shoreland and SSI have proved to be an excellent partnership so far, and as the Thai based company appears to be going from strength to strength in the UK, it is a partnership that should only continue to grow.
