Shoreland Access Summoned To Protect St. David!

St. David's Hotel & Spa, Cardiff Bay

The St. David’s Hotel is Cardiff’s only AA 5 star rated hotel and it has become somewhat of a local landmark. The unmistakable sail that adorns the rooftop is a feature that really sets the hotel apart from the surrounding area.

Cardiff Bay boasts a shoreline that can compete with some of the finest in Europe. The area has become a hotspot for trendy shops, bars and restaurants. Being situated in such a location is ideal for the luxury hotel but it can also prove challenging in other areas, such as maintenance.

The location of St. David’s means it is very much open to the elements. Protecting the hotel and of the course the sail on the roof, from the wind, rain and particularly the sea, is a year round job.

Shoreland Access has recently been enrolled to take on a major project in restoring and protecting the steel structure beneath the sail from corrosion.

Shoreland has carried out similar projects previously on major landmarks such as the Glasgow Science Tower. For this reason, Shoreland’s expertise has proved pivotal when Principal Hayley, the hotel's owners, selected them to undertake the project.

As you can see from some of the photographs, the steel structure is of substantial size. In order to access the structure, Shoreland has assigned eight Rope Access Technicians who will work on the sail for over two months. Technicians will first target stripping the rust and corrosion back before applying anti-corrosive metal primer paint.
Nearly half way through the project and work is progressing nicely. There have been some minor setbacks, mainly due to poor weather and Barack Obama.

Yes I did say Barack Obama. The President of The United States had the audacity to attend a NATO summit based in the area, meaning Shoreland had to postpone their important works, in order for his secret service to place snipers on the roof.

Shoreland Access are well versed in these sorts of setbacks however, and took it all well within their stride. Work has now recommenced and is very much on track. We look forward to providing you with a further update once all work is completed and another successful Shoreland project is brought to a close.
